Prince Philip

Today you will have heard the very sad news of the death of HRH Prince Phillip. It is incredibly sad news. We would encourage you to uphold the Royal Family in your prayers and that they may know the presence and the peace of God in their time of loss. As we now enter a time of national mourning as the National Church and here in Cove we want to serve one another and our wider community in this time.

Firstly, to say along with many other churches throughout the land we will be ringing the bell at St John's 99 times at 12pm on Saturday in honour of Prince Phillip. You are welcome to go and stand in the ground at St John's at this time if this would be helpful - also as this is a public thing for our community please do feel free to share this information with others who may be interested to know.

Secondly, we would like to open both of our buildings so we can come and pray and light a candle but also to have this available for the wider community to do the same. We know the church can often be a place of peace at a time like this and also where people turn in such events. We are intending on opening Christ Church between 10am-midday from tomorrow (but not Sunday) until next Friday and St John's from 5-7pm from this Sunday until next Friday.

Thirdly. there is an online book of condolences as we are not able to have these in the church building with covid restrictions. If you would like to contribute to this the link is here https://www.churchofengland.org/remembering-his-royal-highness-prince-philip

Finally, at times like this it can be difficult to know what to pray. The Church of England have written prayer which will be said throughout the country at this time and maybe helpful for our own prayers :

A prayer on the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

God of our lives, we give you thanks for the life of Prince Phillip,
for his love of our country,
and for his devotion to duty.
We entrust him now to your love and mercy,
through our Redeemer Jesus Christ.

The diocese have also sent this prayer through which maybe helpful in our own grief:

Support us O Lord,
all the day long of this troublous life,
until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes,
the busy world is hushed,
the fever of life is over and our work is done;
then Lord, in your mercy, grant us safe lodging,
a holy rest, and peace at the last,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God bless you all at this time
