Corona Readings and Prayers

Welcome to this space for prayer from all at St John’s and Christ Church in the Parish of Cove.

Our churches have stood for many years at the heart of our community through good and bad times, offering God worship, prayer and praise; and trying to show His great love for the world in practical ways.

Coronavirus has brought huge challenges to every aspect of our society. We live in times which are unsettling and quite different from anything we have ever experienced.

We trust in a God who has shown his character as our creator and loving saviour.

There are two questions we ask:

1. What does God have to say in this current pandemic crisis?

2. How can we pray as we seek to respond to the situation we face?

Hearing from God – what is he saying to us through the bible?

[Jesus said:] come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30

[Jesus said]: peace I leave you with you; my peace I give to you……Do not let your hearts be trouble, and do not let them be afraid. John 14:27

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbour as yourself.” I am the Lord. Lev 19:18

Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord our God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want… Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff: they comfort me. Psalm 23:1, 4

The Lord is near to the broken hearted Psalm 34:18

[The Lord says to His people]: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine………you will not be forgotten by me Isaiah 43:1, 2; 44:21

[Jesus] the light of all people shines in the darkness, and the darkness [does] not overcome it [him]. John 1:4-5

[Saint Paul writes] Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer & Do not seek your own advantage but that of others & We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed but not driven to despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed Romans 12:12,  1 Corinthians 10:24, 2 Corinthians 4:8

[And the Bible’s closing verses has a great vision of when]: The home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them and they will be his people, and God Himself will be with them……. he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more. Revelation 21:3,4

Speaking to God – how can we pray?

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name
Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive each other
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever.
Amen.
(Traditional version of The Lord’s Prayer)

Keep us good Lord under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty & distress.
Sustain & support the anxious & fearful,
and lift up all who are brought low
that we may rejoice in your comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

God of compassion, be close to those who are ill, those who are afraid or in isolation.
In their loneliness, be their consolation.
In their anxiety be their hope; in their darkness, be their light;
through him who suffered on the cross
but reigns with you in glory. Jesus Christ our Lord.

Gracious God, give skill, sympathy and resilience to all who are caring for the sick,
and your wisdom to those searching for a cure.
Strengthen them with your Spirit, that through their work,
many will be restored to health
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

God be in my head & in my understanding;
God be in my eyes & in my looking;
God be in my mouth & in my speaking;
God be in my heart & in my speaking;
God be at my end & at my departing.  Amen.

God promises to bless us

The Lord bless you & keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you & be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, & give you peace     Numbers 6:24-26

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit Romans 15:13

Amen
