Sunday Worship at St John's

8am: Holy Communion

For an hour on a Sunday morning, we offer an opportunity for breathing space, sacred space…  An opportunity to learn and grow and worship together...

This Service is ideal for those for whom worship is enabled in a beautiful, quiet, formal and liturgical setting and also for young parents who perhaps may wish to take turns to give each other an opportunity for ‘me and God time’ - to sit quietly and worship and reflect in that brief window when children are often more settled before the day begins in earnest..

10am: Worship Together

If, on the other hand, the chance to worship with a more multi-generational group of people, in a more informal setting is more to your liking, then do come to the 10am Service. Here, you will find Harry, the puppet, on hand to welcome the children before they go to the Church Hall for Junior Church every Sunday (Except for the All together Service on the 1St Sunday of the month – see below).

At this Service, we are led by a group of gifted musicians and singers in learning new songs as well as singing hymns and songs that, having stood the test of time, are familiar to many. We are intentional about creating spaces for encounter with God – through singing, silence, multi-sensory prayers and carefully chosen words (liturgy). With our data projection and well-positioned TV screens, we make use of the opportunities that a multi-media approach brings to making our worship more accessible in a highly visual age. We work to make our teaching and preaching accessible, relevant and passionate and pray that it will be transforming.

On the 1st Sunday of the month, we meet in the church hall at 10am for an hour of worship and learning, featuring a story-teller. This Sunday is when the children learn the joy of serving others – they decorate cup cakes which they then deliver to St John’s Court: the Residential Home, which is increasingly part of our extended church family.. What happens during the week?

Life Groups

Like the other churches in the parish, St John's has a house group network (Life Groups), where members of the church family meet to study the Bible, enjoy friendship and fellowship as well as pray or be prayed for. It is primarily through these Life Groups that we seek to provide sustainable care and connection, accountability and spiritual formation here at St John’s. We have groups that meet weekly or fortnightly. If you would like more information about what is involved or if you would like to join a Life Group, please fill in a Life Groups Form to indicate your interest and availability.

Little Fishes

We, as a church family, warmly welcome children, with all the joy (and chaos!) that they bring. In addition to the activities we provide on a Sunday morning, we run a toddler group, Little Fishes, which has become famous for its homemade cakes!

Tea Time Together

On the last Wednesday of the month we meet for 2 hours of fun, friendship, formation and food in the church Hall at 4.30pm. Please contact Esther if you would like more information.  Click here for details.

The wider Community

St John's Church enjoys good relationships in the community, especially with St John's Court Residential Home, Cove Infant School and the numerous users of St John's Hall. St John's hosts a good programme of social events to which all our welcome (please see our year planner for more details). For instance, in April 2011, we hosted a Royal Wedding Party for the wider community which was enjoyed by many and further highlighted our vision to put St John’s at the centre of our community.  Further afield, we have recently signed up to raise money for a Christian Aid Partnership Project in Burkina Faso. By pledging to raise £5,000 by January 2013, the project will receive matched funding of 4 times that amount from the European Union.

St John's then and now

St John the Baptist was built in 1844, and is the original parish church building. It is a charming building and has a large churchyard (now closed, but with a Garden of Remembrance for ashes).

If you haven’t been in St John’s in recent years, it is worth a visit to see the beautiful re-ordering of the interior - whose beauty continues to encourage us all to keep pressing forward in the development and upkeep of our church and in our ministry and mission.

Our next challenge is the church extension, whose aim is to make St John’s a self-contained building which is 'accessible to all'. The proposed project would involve extending the existing building at the end of the nave to provide a disabled toilet and a foyer space for hospitality. This would make the church a viable venue for mid-week activities, such as regular coffee mornings, Toddler Praise events, and a lunch for the over 65s, as well as ensuring it is open more often for school groups and churchyard visitors and enquirers.
